Sinds 2001 vormen drummer Patrick Carney en zanger/gitarist Dan Auerbach, beiden afkomstig uit Akron, Ohio, The Black Keys. Op albums als Thickfreakness (2003) en Rubber Factory (2004) weten ze hun minimale bezetting optimaal in te zetten voor hun rauwe Blues-Rock.
Sinds 2008 is hun ster flink rijzende. Met de albums Attack & Release en Blakroc zijn ze bij een breder publiek onder de aandacht gekomen. In 2010 kwam hun laatste album uit: Brothers. Met singles als 'Tighten Up' en 'Howlin' For You', kwam de cd binnen op de 3e plaats van de Amerikaanse albumverkooplijst. Maar ook de recensies waren allemaal zeer goed, en de cd stond ook in vele oudejaarslijsten van toonaangevende muzieksites en magazines. Ook wonnen ze twee Grammy's.
