Volgens toonaangevend jazzmagazine Downbeat beheerst Charles McPherson als geen ander de muzikale taal van Charlie Parker. De altsaxofonist speelde van 1960 tot 1972 bij Charles Mingus en houdt met zijn eigen muziek de bebop in ere.
